Biography:

Perry Yang is an Associate Professor jointly appointed to the School of City and Regional Planning and the School of Architecture at College of Architecture of Georgia Institute of Technology. He received his academic degrees from National Taiwan University (Ph.D., M.Sc. and B.Sc.) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MS). In 1999, he was awarded the Fulbright Scholarship and became the SPURS Fellow at MIT from 1999 to 2001. After that, he joined National University of Singapore as an Assistant Professor of Architecture and Urban Design from 2001 to 2008. Perry’s research, teaching and practice focus on Ecologically Sustainable Design in Urban Settings. Since 2001, he has published extensively in this particular area including refereed journal articles, conference papers, book chapters, reviews and design works. His academic effort in Georgia Tech is organized around the idea of Urban Ecosystems Design Simulation Lab through courses, studio teaching and funded research, coupled with his urban design practice Eco Systems Design Studio (ESD) in Shanghai and Taipei. He has been awarded prizes in urban design competitions continuously from 2005. The recent awards include the 1st prize in international competition of the 2009 World Games Park at Kaohsiung City of Taiwan in 2005, a project opened in July 2009 and featured by CNN as an eco-friendly venue. The other 1st prize awards include the Eco-city design at Maluan Bay in one of China's most important port cities Xiamen in 2007, the Suidong Bay Urban Design in 2008 and the Green Heart design at Shunde in 2010 in Guangdong, the Pearl River Delta Region of China. His urban design work was recently featured in one of China’s leading architecture journals WA (World Architecture) in January 2010 issue Ecological Urbanism. His new book Ecological Urbanism: Scale, Complexity and Design was recently published by China Architecture and Building Press in Beijing in 2010. He is on editorial boards of two academic journals, Progress in Industrial Ecology and Modern Urban Research. He was appointed the board member of the International Urban Planning and Environment Association (UPE) from January 2007, and served as the co-chair of the organizing committee of UPE9 in Guangzhou China in August 2010.
