  • Biography:
Professor Debasish Roy, who obtained his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in 1995 followed by post doctoral research at the University of Innsbruck, Austria, in 1996, is currently a Professor in Computational Mechanics at IISc, India. A fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering, he also holds an Honorary Professorship in the School of Engineering, University of Aberdeen, UK. Prof Roy has conducted substantive research in the broad areas of computational mechanics, stochastic dynamical systems and inverse problems. A notable contribution in computational mechanics is a class of new discretization strategies, e.g. the DMS-FEM, that enable computing smoother response approximations by suitably combining the finite element with mesh-free methods. This has resulted in superior resolutions of several ill-conditioned problems in solid mechanics, e.g. 3D deformations of nearly incompressible solids, ultra-thin membranes or structural systems developing shear bands under impact loading. Exploiting a novel additive updating strategy derived through a change of probability measures and based on the theory of martingales, he has developed new stochastic search methods for tackling global optimization, medical diagnostic imaging, structural system identification and tsunami wave propagation/source characterization problems, wherein noisy and sparse data have often precluded acceptable resolutions by other competing strategies.
