标题: An overview of new strategies in antifouling coatings
Two main antifouling paints are used for preventing the development of organisms (bacteria, algae, barnacles, mussels,..). The first type called Self Polishing Coating (SPC), is based on binders allowing a release control of biocides . The second one known as Fouling Release Coating (FRC) is based on polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) resins used as binder combining low surface energy and low elastic modulus, allowing a detachment of fouling organisms by hydrodynamic forces during navigation. In order to improve efficacy and for limiting the environmental impact, different new strategies are investigated: self-stratified coating having amphiphilic surfaces, nanostructured surfaces through block copolymers, redox addressable polymers bearing electroactive pendent groups, biohydrolysable polymers, hydrolysable FRC,….
André Margaillan obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1987 at the University of Aix-Marseille (France) , working on the mechanism of action of antifouling coatings. In 1992, he obtained a postdoctoral position in the laboratory of Professor Thieo Hogen-Esch (University of Southern California, U.S.A.). There he worked on the synthesis of block copolymers through anionic polymerization. In 1993, he obtained a position of Assistant Professor at the University of Toulon. He developed a team dealing with macromolecular engineering. The main domain of application was antifouling coatings and drag reduction agents. He became a full Professor in 2002. From 2006 to 2015, he has managed the “MAtériaux Polymères Interfaces Environnement Marin” (MAPIEM) laboratory. He has 70 research articles published in peer reviewed international journal. He co-authored a paper untitled « Fouling Release Coatings: A Nontoxic Alternative to Biocidal Antifouling Coatings » published in Chemical Reviews in 2012.Review
