标题: Country Status on Phylogeny and Genomic Diversity studies of Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) in Pakistan
摘要:
A large number of people in Pakistan are dependent on domestic livestock species for their livelihood. Pakistan is blessed with rich animal genetic resources both domestic and wild. Due to vast geographical diversity there is huge variety of livestock species in Pakistan. The genetic architecture, phylogeny and genetic diversity of these species were explored using FAO and ISAG recommended molecular markers. Among molecular markers we applied mitochondrial control region, microsatellite markers on different species. In addition to these the genes related to immunity, fecundity, prion protein were also explored in cattle (Bos indicus), buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), sheep (Ovis aries) and goat (Capra hircus) breeds of Pakistan following the classical molecular biology approaches involving PCR amplification followed by Sanger’s sequencing, alignment, SNPs identification, phylogeny construction using bioinformatics software. We also compared our native breeds with reported data from GenBank. The data produced gave us useful information about the genomic structure of native livestock breeds of Pakistan. Modern molecular biology and biotechnology techniques are being adopted and applied on selected breeds as well.

Professor Masroor Ellahi Babar has been contributing actively in teaching and research from more than 25 years in the field of Livestock Production, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Functional Genomics. He has the honor to become the first tenured professor in the field of Animal and Veterinary Science in Pakistan. He has post-doctoral trainings from Canada and USA. I have received many awards and distinctions including Star Award, Excellence Award from Prime Minister of Pakistan, Excellence award from Chief Minister Punjab, Quaid-e-Azam Gold Medal, Best University Teacher Award from Higher Education Commission for outstanding teaching and research and Research Productivity Award from Ministry of Science and Technology. He has published more than 250 research papers and supervised 88 post graduate students. In recognition of his services the President of Pakistan honored me with Tamgha-i-Imtiaz in 2013. Currently he is leading a research group focused on genomic studies in domestic and wild animal genetic resource of Pakistan in collaboration with different national and international research groups.
