Dr. Baiyu Zhang Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada
Biography: Dr. Baiyu Zhang received her bachelor's and master's degrees in environmental science from Jilin University in China and doctoral degree in environmental engineering from University of Regina in Canada. She was then awarded a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) Postdoctoral Fellowship and continued her research at Dalhousie University. Dr. Zhang is now an associate professor in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science at Memorial University, Canada. Dr. Zhang’s research expertise and interests mainly focus on the development and application of technologies for marine and costal pollution control and sustainable development of ocean industries in cold and harsh environments. More specifically she has been conducting innovative research in the areas of offshore oil spill response, shoreline/ onshore site remediation, coastal solid waste composting and reuse, marine wastewater treatment, environmental microbiology and system analysis. Since joining Memorial, she has acted as PI or Co-PI in over 20 research grants funded by government, industry and other funding organizations. She has produced over 160 publications including 57 SCI journal articles, 37EI cited refereed proceeding papers and book chapters, and 3 patents for technical transfer. She is the leading researcher in environmental technology at the Northern Region Persistent Organic Pollution Control (NRPOP) Laboratory. Dr. Zhang has been actively involved in engineering associations and professional communities. She has been serving as a Senior Expert of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Atlantic Region Director of Canadian Association on Water Quality (CAWQ), Executive Committee Member and Faculty/Student Advisor of Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) NL Section. She is an Editorial Board Member and the Guest Editor for 4 international journals, as well as a reviewer for over 30 refereed journals, international conferences, and major research funds. She is a registered professional engineer in Canada.
