Biography: 
Dr. Orest Cap is a professor in the Department of Curriculum, Teaching and Learning at the University of Manitoba, Acting Associate Dean of Education (undergraduate programs) and as of July 1, 2016 the new Acting Director of the Centre for Ukrainian Canadian Studies. Professor Cap was the former Director of the Imperial Oil Academy for the Learning of Mathematics, Science and Technology and is the current President of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts and Sciences in Canada. He received his teacher college diploma from Ecole Normale Ville-Marie currently Université du Québec à Montréal, M.Ed. from Rutgers University and his Ph.D. from Ohio State University. Dr. Cap is an acknowledged leader, distinguished educator and respected researcher in teacher education, digital technology, human rights education, federal legislation dealing with adult vocational-technical education, and international education. His vitae lists an extensive list of funded research grants and development projects, national and international scholarly presentations and over one hundred and forty publications. He has delivered a number of key presentations in Canada, United States, Spain, Greece, Italy, Cuba, Poland, Jordan, Ukraine, Nigeria, Croatia, and China. Professor Cap is fluent in three languages (French, Ukrainian and English). Over his career, he has received a number of honors, including being elected member of Phi Delta Kappa, the University of Manitoba’s President's Outreach Award for contributions to the field of international education and training in (1999), the Chernihivska (Ukraine) Oblasna Rada Medal and Hramota for humanitarian-educational initiatives (2009), the Chernihiv (Ukraine) Special Needs Organization - Chance (2011) for his assistance with the challenged population, and in (2011) he shared with Dr. Hlynka the Dr. Michael and Muriel Ewanchuk Award for designing and delivering an innovative course called “Social Justice: Teaching the Ukrainian Famine Genocide (Holodomor) and Ukrainian Canadian Internment” . In May of 2011 he was appointed to a professorship (Faculty of Philosophy) by the Academic Senate of the Ukrainische Freie Universitat (UFU) a leading private graduate university located in Munich, Germany. He was recognized as “Researcher of the Week” by The Centre for Human Rights Research, University of Manitoba in the fall of 2012. On behalf of the Governor General of Canada (February 13, 2013) he was presented “The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal” in recognition of his contributions to Canada. Recently he was selected as an Outstanding Teacher (May 7, 2014) at the University of Manitoba by the Centre for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning. In October of 2015 he was recognized by the Governor of the Province of Chernihiv, Ukraine for his professional educational initiatives in the Province. As member of the Taras Shevchenko 200 Committee of the Ukrainian Canadian Congress - Manitoba Provincial Council he shared the Ukrainian World Congress Commemorative Award -Medal for significant contribution to popularizing the creative heritage of Taras Shevchenko and honoring him outside of Ukraine.
