标题: The fundamental basis for computational modelling of wire ropes.

The effective computational modelling of wire ropes involves two major issues: modelling of a wire as a part of continuum and modelling of contact interactions between wires. This requires to solve the fundamental problems of the compatibility of both models: how to choose a model for wire ropes capturing the most mechanical effects and how to construct a contact algorithm, which is capturing all geometrically possible contact situations. A Wire-To-Wire contact can be dually described, depending on the scale, either as a curve-to-curve contact, or as a surface to surface contact algorithm. The surface-to-surface (STS) contact algorithm describes the interaction between wires as the interaction between two surfaces and in the nominal case requires a continuum description of the beams in terms of solid finite elements, which is computationally expensive. The curve-to-curve (CTC) contact algorithm is rising from the curve to curve closest point projection (CPP) procedure determining a minimal distance between curves. First of all, the existence and uniqueness criterion of the CPP procedure should be investigated. Thus, the current contribution is focusing on the detailed analysis of this criterion, namely, on the case of multiple solutions of the CPP for ``parallel curves``, which is a major situation for the contact in wire ropes. It is shown that the CTC contact algorithm cannot be applied for general parallel curves, which can be generated in an arbitrary range of angles between the tangent lines -- this case including any wire ropes and also knots connection. For this case a new, so-called, Curve-To-Solid Beam (CTSB) contact algorithm is developed. This algorithm requires a special Solid Beam finite element to model a wire and, therefore, is combining the advantages of existence and uniqueness of the CPP for surfaces contact together with the flexibility of application to wire-to-wire contact. All possible applications of various contact pairs for wire ropes - Surface To Surface, Curve To Curve and Point To Curve are revised in the current contribution based on the existence and uniqueness of the corresponding CPP procedures. A special case with ''parallel tangent`` vectors is investigated numerically and is considered from the perspective of the classical Hertzian contact for cylindrical bodies. It is found numerically that the corresponding length of a contact zone is well correlated with the Hertz theory. Effective applications for wire ropes of the developed strategy - Solid Beam finite element plus Curve To Solid Beam contact algorithm - is illustrated in numerical examples.

PD Dr. habil. Alexander Konyukhov graduated from Kazan State University (now Kazan (Volga region) Federal University) in 1997, with Diploma degree with honor in Mechanics and Applied Mathematics. In 1999 he accomplished his PhD in Physical and Mathematical Science with specialization in Solid Mechanics with subject: “Local effects in thermo-elastic plates and shells” (cum Laude). In 1999 he started as a lecturer on Mechanics at Kazan State University, where he has been working till his leave to Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany in 2002. During his working period, in year 1999 he has been accepted as a part-time student at the Department of Economics at Kazan Institute of Economics, Management and Law and in 2001 he defended his Diploma in Finance&Credit on subject: “Financial Analysis of Oil-production and Oil-refining Industry in Tatarstan Republic (period 1991-1997).”

In 2002 Dr. A. Konyukhov has received postdoctoral DAAD scholarship and arrived to Institute of Mechanics, University of Karlsruhe (now Karlsruhe Institute of Technology) in Germany, where he started to work with Professor Dr.-Ing. Karl Schweizerhof. There he continued research in thermomechanics and developed the specific interest in computational contact mechanics working over years as a researcher and then as an independent researcher and a project leader supervising Diploma and PhD students. His students have been awarded with industrial prices as well as University Prices for the best thesises. In 2010 Dr. A.Konyukhov achieved the Habilitation and “Venia Legendi” in mechanics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology – the highest German academic qualification – and received his Doctor habilitus and his status as Privatdozent.

In November 2014 Kazan National Research Technical University (KNRTU-KAI) for the research and teaching consulting endowed him with a title “Extraordinary Professor”.

The teaching experience of A. Konyukhov includes teaching on various courses in mechanics at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT, Germany), Kazan State University (Russia) and at the University of Nottingham, Ningbo, China for over 15 years. At KIT he has established a completely new course on “Computational Contact Mechanics” for PhD and Master/Diploma students. The course is based on the published in 2012 at Springer book “Computational Contact Mechanics” as well as on the book “Introduction into Computational Contact Mechanics” to be published by Wiley in 2015.

He is acting as an international expert and peer reviewer in the field of Computational Mechanics and Contact Mechanics. He is author of several research and teaching monographs in Russian and English languages. His industrial experience includes consultancy at LSTC, Livermore, USA, industrial projects in Germany as well as FEM consultancy in CADFEM, Russia and FEM consultancy in China.
