Biography:
Dr. H.O Nwankwoala holds a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Applied Hydrogeology (2013) at the University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Geology, University of Port Harcourt, Nigeria. His research interest offers him more opportunity to advance the frontiers of geoscientific knowledge through quality research and approaches assignments and research as a specialist with earnestness to deliver quality and dependable results.
Nwankwoala’s research works adopts a holistic approach to unravel ‘the big picture’ of hydro-geological and geo-environmental conditions. His research interests are broad based and have ranged widely over the hydro-geological spectrum, (including but not limited to Hydrogeology, forensic geosciences, applied hydro-geophysics, hydro-informatics, environmental geophysics, marine/offshore geophysics, environmental geo-techniques, fluvial geomorphology, oceanography, environmental impact assessment, waste management, water resources planning/management, eco-hydrology, biogeochemistry, geo-microbiology, environmental geochemistry, contaminant hydrogeology, environmental hydrogeology, with special emphasis to hydrogeochemistry, groundwater modeling/unsaturated zone studies, hydrogeochemical processes, solute transport, medical geology etc.) but with special interest in the impacts of human activities on the quantity and quality of groundwater resources. In the process, he has produced significant results.
Beyond teaching of courses, he has supervised over one hundred (100) undergraduate research projects and twelve (12) Post Graduate Diploma Research Projects and 5 M.Scthesis between 2006 to date. He is an avid/astute researcher. He has written a number of high impact assessment/standard geotechnical reports and has widely published research articles in both local and international learned/reputed scientific peer reviewed journals and in conference proceedings. He has also contributed to chapters in reference textbooks and presented over 15 conference papers and spoken in several symposia, seminars and meetings, and has also delivered several invited papers and keynote addresses. He has also served in many capacities in the academia within Nigeria and provided expertise internationally, working for United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in the Transboundary Water Assessment Programme (TWAP) for West and Central African countries.
Nwankwoala is a member of several learned societies, both within and outside Nigeria including, but not limited to Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS), Nigerian Association of Hydrogeologists (NAH), Nigerian Association of Hydrological Sciences (NAHS), Nigerian Union of Planetary and Radio Sciences (NURPS), Nigerian Association of Petroleum Explorationists (NAPE), International Association of Hydrogeologists (IAH), International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS), International Association for Environmental Hydrologists (IAEH), International Water Association (IWA), Association of Geoscientists for International Development (AGID), International Society for Porous Media (INTERPORE), International Medical Geology Association (IMGA), Global Technocrats and Intellectual’s Association (GTIA), International Geoscience Education Organization (IGEO), Global Groundwater Forum (GGF) – hosted by the International Groundwater Resources Assessment Centre (IGRAC) and moderated in collaboration with UNESCO International Hydrological Programme (IHP) – Groundwater Systems Section. He is also a current member of IGRAC Meta-Information Module – aimed at facilitating online conversation between its network of Groundwater Professionals and belongs to a number of working commissions/technical committees under the aegis of several organizations related to water resources management such as the IAH Commission on Groundwater Quality, member – African Groundwater Network (AGW-NET), member – IWA Water Safety Plan Specialist Group, Global Groundwater Monitoring Network. He is also an active and respected member of International Research and Development Network. He is a professionally registered/licensed Geoscientist with the Council of Mining Engineers and Geoscientists (COMEG) since 2007.
