Title: Tribological Aspects of Metal Matrix Composites
Abstract:
Discontinuous Metal matrix composites (DMMC’s) are currently gaining popularity in automotive, marine and aerospace applications owing to their higher strength to weight ratio, excellent tribological properties, lower coefficient of thermal expansion, higher fatigue life coupled with good elevated strength properties when compared with current popular light alloys. However, there are challenges in achieving the above advantages of DMMC’s as their desired mechanical and tribological properties are dictated mainly by the extent of uniformity in distribution of reinforcements in the matrix alloy, agglomeration and the nature of bond. These factors need to be controlled during the processing of DMMC’s. In the light of the above this lecture focuses on (1)Overcoming these issues in developing high quality DMMC’s in particular Aluminium based composites with reinforcements being silicon nitride and silicon carbide. Further In-situ processing techniques in developing novel composites for specific engineering applications will be discussed featuring the merits over conventional ex-situ methods. Challenges in secondary processing of DMMC’s both extrusion and forging regards manufacturing of automotive components will also be discussed. (2)Tribological behavior of the above DMMC’s will be discussed with major emphasis on wear mechanism. (3) Slurry erosion wear behavior of the above DMMC’s will be discussed with major emphasis on material removal mechanism. (4) Some specific Applications of secondary processed DMMCs will also be discussed
