  • Title: Bridging Engineering and Medicine
  • Abstract: Engineering solution in medicine is an emerging science that uses engineering principles and technologies to create living tissues, organs, or organisms for clinical application. The most promising progress in this field is tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. Although tissue engineering and regenerative medicine has been underwent investigation long time ago, the success has been made until recent a couple decades with modern medicine development. As a biomedical engineering scientist with clinical background and experience, in the following presentation, I will highlight the history of the tissue engineering and regenerative medicine, the barriers between engineering and medicine, as well as the obstacles between basic science in biomedical engineering and clinical practice. Then, I will introduce several ongoing studies in my laboratory using tissue engineering approaches for musculoskeletal tissues repair and regeneration, including hand tendon injury, rotator cuff repair, etc.
  • Biography: Dr. Zhao is clinician scientist at Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA, with the dual academic rank of Professor of Orthopedics, Mayo Medical School, and Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Mayo Graduate School. He practiced orthopedic surgery for 15 years after graduating from Tianjin Medical College in 1982. From 1994-1997, he served as vice chair for the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Tianjin Red Cross Hospital. In 1997, he received a fellowship in the Biomechanics Laboratory in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Mayo Clinic to pursue his orthopedic research career. After three years of postdoctoral training in orthopedic biomechanics, he joined Mayo Clinic. His research interests include spine surgery and biomechanics, soft tissue injury, tissue engineering, and medical imaging. He has published over 170 papers in peer reviewed journals and several book chapters. He holds several US patents. Currently, He is a Principal Investigator or Co-investigator on three NIH R01 grants. He is also very active in the professional society including serving the Topic Chair and member of Nominating Committee in the Orthopedic Research Society, and active member of the ORS, AAOS, ASB, and ISB. Based on his 15 years of clinical practice and 17 years of orthopedic research, he has a wide knowledge and skill in both clinical and research.
