A first-principles study on physical and chemical properties of carbon nanomaterials

Defects in atomic layered materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes could enhance the reactivity and modify the electronic properties, and such functionalized carbon nanomaterials by controlling defects might therefore provide novel applications in nanoelectronics, storages, sensors, etc. In this talk, I will present our theoretical works of substitutional doping and gas adsorption effects on the atomic configurations, the stabilities and the electronic properties of graphene layers and carbon nanotubes, based on the first-principles electronic-structure calculations within the density-functional theory.


Dr. Yoshitaka Fujimoto received his Ph.D. degree in Engineering from Osaka University, Japan. After receiving his Ph. D., he worked at Institute of Industrial Science, the University of Tokyo, and at Center for Computational Sciences, University of Tsukuba. In 2009, he joined Department of Physics, Tokyo Institute of Technology as an Assistant Professor. His research interests include formations and electronic properties of lattice defects in surfaces and interfaces of semiconductor hetero-systems and atomic-layered materials such as graphene and h-boron-nitrides. He has published over 50 technical articles in peer-reviewed journals, reviews, book, book chapters, etc. and has served as referee of many international journals, organizer and committee in conferences.
